Since 2001, Angela Healy worked for AvenueWest Corporate Housing in Denver – helping founders, Kimberly and Eric Smith, manage their financials and run the day-to-day operations. Angela was pivotal in helping AvenueWest grow and find success over the years – including early on in the business when the company took a financial hit in the failing economy. Over the years, Angela helped the Smiths create the AvenueWest Managed Corporate Housing Franchise model and even assisted with the on-boarding of the franchisee team in Colorado Springs.
Along the way, Angela learned that Kimberly and Eric’s long-term plans were to eventually franchise the Denver market.
“When I told Tim [my husband] that AvenueWest Denver was available for purchase as a franchise, he said, ‘Have you ever thought of us buying Denver?’ I’d been working in the business for so long that it made sense that I would be the perfect successor,” says Angela. “The best part was that my husband had always wanted to own a business – so it was truly the right fit for us to do together.”
Kimberly says that Angela was a natural fit to take over the business given her experience and deep corporate housing knowledge.
“Between her strong corporate housing background experience and Tim’s impressive business acumen and entrepreneurial desires, Eric and I knew they were the right team to take over the Denver market,” says Kimberly.
AvenueWest Denver Changes Hands
In 2010, the Healys officially purchased the AvenueWest Denver franchise, thus beginning their journey as corporate housing entrepreneurs.
After taking over AvenueWest Denver, the Healys became iron-focused on their mission: To match those seeking corporate housing in Denver with those offering furnished, short-term rental properties.
“We are lucky to live in Denver as we get to cater to a variety of people in need of corporate housing, from business professionals and traveling consultants to relocating employees, traveling healthcare professionals, on-assignment military personnel, traveling theater companies and more,” says Tim.
The State of Denver’s Corporate Housing Market
Angela and Tim add that Denver is traditionally a high-demand market for corporate housing, and they don’t see that changing anytime soon.
“While we are currently seeing a lot of clients sell their properties because it’s a hot seller’s market, at the same time we are adding new clients who are looking for a competitive advantage when it comes to managing and marketing their unique furnished properties available for rent,” says Angela.

While Tim had little corporate housing experience when he took over AvenueWest Denver in 2011, he says he has since undergone a steep learning curve.

Ahhhh summertime. The weather is hot and the living is easy, that is if you don’t have to move! Moving is a stressful process that has way too many moving parts. But, if you get organized and follow the checklist below, your move should have less headaches.
Decide how you are going to get all of your stuff from your current residence to your new one: are you going to hire a moving company or do it yourself? If you decide to hire a professional moving company, shop around to find the one that is going to be the most cost-effective for your trip. You can always hire a go-between company such as Consumers Relocation that will assign you to your very own agent who will find you the best rates from companies that they have a lasting relationship with. If you plan to do the move yourself, be sure you find some friends and family members that can help you out on moving day.
Determine the items that are going to be coming with you on your move and donate/sell unwanted items to make your load smaller.
- Organize and Transfer all of your important documents such as your kids school documents, medical, dental, vision, and veterinary.
- Inventory all of the items that will be coming with you and determine if your current furniture will fit in your new place.
Get plenty of boxes and moving materials such as packing tape, permanent markers (to write on the boxes), etc.
Change your address with the post office. Disconnect your current utilities/cable/phone/internet services and have them re-connected or set up at the new place prior to your move.
- Make travel arrangements for your pets (if applicable).
Notify your friends and family that you will be moving and give them your new address.
- Begin packing the items you won’t be using prior to your move.
Plan your meals for the time before your move accordingly.
Refill prescriptions and be sure you have enough until you can get more in your new location.
- Pack all valuables and essentials needed on hand during the move – these items should be in the car with you.
Drain all water hoses and empty and defrost your fridge and freezer 24 hours before you go.
- Check the house to make sure that you have everything on moving day. If you are hiring a professional moving company, be sure you go over the inventory list before and after you arrive at your new destination.
Hopefully this moving checklist will help anyone relocating this summer. If you are going to be relocating to a new city entirely, it might be wise to get a fully furnished rental in the new neighborhood for a couple months before your move to familiarize yourself with your new surroundings. Or, if you are having problems selling your current house and need to move to the new location right away, you could always hire a property manager that can manage your property on your behalf and get you some additional income until the property can be sold.

Travel Tip of the Week #9:
Pack Smart. For all the business gals out there, this tip will be especially helpful for you, but don’t worry guys; we have some tips for you too. Ladies, do not travel while wearing high heels and don’t pack them either. Bring some nice sensible flats that are business chic too so you make a lasting impression without slowing down the group or falling on your face. Only pack a maximum of three pairs of shoes for your entire trip and rotate daily. Pack only what can be used in many ways and dress them up with accessories like scarves, belts, or tights.
Gentlemen, pack only one suit and bring a few different shirts, ties, and socks to make it different each day. If you will be playing golf, then bring one extra pair of pants or shorts and a couple of polo shirts. Keep your packing to a minimum, as possible, so you can keep your bags light and you won’t need to worry about what to wear either.

When it comes to unit damages, it can sometimes come down to the company’s word against yours, so protect yourself from unnecessary charges at check-out by referencing these three tips:
- Conduct Thorough Check List Review: The corporate housing provider should give you a unit condition sheet (i.e. an inventory check list specific to the property upon your arrival). Be sure to fill this out in detail after you first move in, make a copy for yourself, and re-submit the form back to the company within 24 hours.
- Take Photos: If there are damages to the unit when you first move in (such as scratches in appliances, torn furniture, stains on the carpet/upholstery, etc.) be sure to take photos. Better yet, take a recording on your phone of the entire unit from top to bottom while completing the initial walk through upon move in. This way, if the company charges you for any damages that were there before, you will have your own proof to prove otherwise.
- Create Your Own List: Compile your own checklist of the unit’s inventory within 24 hours of checking in and before departing the unit in detail in case any missing items are charged to you. Also, property management corporate housing companies will have the specific inventory for all of their properties in their office. Be sure to ask them for a copy so you can compare it with yours. Send in your arrival and departure inventory lists with the unit condition sheet to the company as soon as possible.
Remember everything needs to be in writing and in photo/video to ensure you will not be charged for damages. The more thorough you are, the better covered you will be in making a case.
While many professionals believe that all corporate housing companies and leasing agents are the same, the truth is that there are unique differences between the three popular types of corporate housing companies.
First, there are “service companies” which rent apartments, furnish and equip them, then offer the apartments as corporate housing rentals.
Second, there are “apartment companies,” which own or manage apartment complexes and may use some of their inventory as furnished corporate housing.
Third, there are “management companies,” which are real estate property management companies that manage properties owned and furnished by individual investors.
A relocated executive with a family and/or pet would probably prefer a unique home in a neighborhood setting, whereas a company may need 20 of the same units located within one apartment complex.
Each type of corporate housing company offers different services and amenities. Asking the right questions of your leasing agent will ensure a more pleasant experience for all:
Rates. What does the monthly rate include? Are there additional fees? Is a discounted rate for signing a longer lease possible? These questions will help a guest enter into a lease agreement with more knowledge and confidence.
Location. Is there a local office or on-site contact should the guest require assistance? If the company does not have a local office, ask how the company handles client requests and property issues.
Services. Is there a 24-hour maintenance service or other property amenities that will make the stay more pleasant?
Accreditation. Is the company a Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA) member? CHPA is the trade organization for the industry and requires specific levels of professionalism, excellence, customer service, and etichal standards. Ask whether the leasing agents are Certified Corporate Housing Professionals (CCHP). The CCHP certification means that the corporate housing professional has met industry standards. These accreditations will enable a relocation manager to distinguish a quality corporate housing agent from the pack.
Experience. What percentage of the corporate housing company’s business is involved in corporate relocations? Finding an experienced provider can be a bonus in this changing marketplace.
Protection. How are the company and its vendors insured? This is especially important to find out when working with management companies that manage properties offered by individual homeowners.
Policies. What is the company’s policy when a guest does not like the property? Will they offer other available options to accommodate that guest?
Because not all corporate housing management companies and agents are the same, it is important to ask as many questions as you can think of every time. The experienced and quality companies will be able to address all your questions and concerns with ease.
